Blue Ridge Dulcimer Players
The
group was started in the very late eighties when two players got
together to form the group. The director of the blue ridge arts
association at that time was very helpful and introduced them to Anne
Bailey, who is a current member, and sponsored a class at the Baptist
Church where Bob Thomason, a dulcimer builder and teacher from Helen,
Georgia, came and gave a beginners’ lesson. That is all it took to get
the group up and running.
One of the first performances was at the Labor Day barbeque in Blue
Ridge. The group has enjoyed playing for many venues through the years
and is always willing and happy to continue developing the interest and
enjoyment of this beautiful little instrument.
The group meets every Monday at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church
from 1:30 to 3:30 and welcomes visitors to come to play or to just
listen and learn more about the Appalachian dulcimer.
The Appalachian or mountain dulcimer is a very old instrument having
evolved from the German scheitholt. It has gained in popularity and
there are dulcimer clubs all over the world. It differs from the
hammered dulcimer that is played by striking the strings with small
wooden “hammers.” The mountain dulcimer can also be bowed which is a
fairly new innovation.
All of our players are members of the North Georgia Dulcimer Association
that has members numbering over 400 from every state in the union. The
Blue Ridge chapter is the oldest group in NGFDA.
