Onllwyn Choir
The Choir was founded in 1969 by the
late Taliesin Williams, with Dennis
Roach (ALCM) as the accompanist. Following the sad demise of Mr.
Williams in 1984, Dennis took over as the Musical Director and has given
unstinted and selfless commitment to the choir for its 36 year history.
Mrs. Julie Sims has been the choir’s accompanist for the past 15 years,
and recently CMO have been fortunate to recruit the services of Mrs.
Novella Roberts-Lewis as our deputy accompanist.
Over its 36 year history the choir has raised many thousands of pounds
for
charities and other good causes both in the UK and further afield.
Although
a relatively small choir from an even smaller village in the upper
reaches
of the Dulais Valley, CMO has toured extensively throughout the UK, and
overseas. They were the first Choir to travel behind the "old" iron
curtain, touring to Bulgaria in 1977, having strong links with the coal
mining industry. They were the first choir ever to travel to Barbados in
1991, a trip that was a dream of the late Tal Williams, who wanted to
take the choir to visit his daughter who had emigrated to the island.
The pinnacle of CMO’s touring to date, was an invitation from Paul
Robeson Jr. in 1997, to take part in a concert in CARNEGIE HALL, NY in
1998, to celebrate what would
have been his father’s centenary. The choir has also toured to Eire,
Germany and Spain.
The choir has competed, and won, in many Eisteddfodau since its
inception. It has appeared seven times in the festival of 1,000 voices,
organized by the London Welsh Male Voice Choir and held in the Albert
Hall, London, the choir also appeared at two of the "World Choir" events
held at the Arms Park, Cardiff.
The choir is very adept at trying out new and innovative ideas, and when
invited to perform at the world famous "MTV Brit Awards" to sing with
the
Pet Shop Boys jumped at the chance for some "pop" experience to add to
their classic Welsh repertoire and provided the backing for the world
famous song "GO WEST". As a spin off to the Brit Awards adventure, CMO
were asked to provide the vocal backing in a TV advertisement to a
famous British brand of tinned rice and custard, the Choir has also
appeared with Michael Ball on his own TV show.
