Living Stories of the Cherokee, Collected and Edited by Barbara R. Duncan, The University of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill, NC. 1998.

This book is a collection of Cherokee stories and presents seventy-two traditional and contemporary tales from the Easter Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina as told by six Cherokee storytellers who learned their art and their stories from family and community.

Aunt Mary, Tell Me a Story, A collection of Cherokee Legends and Tales as told by Mary Ulmer Chiltoshkey, Cherokee Publications, Cherokee, North Carolina, 1990.

These stories are told in Aunt Mary style so that they keep the truths foremost, for that is what makes them myths or legends. They teach about the animals and men created by the Great One. The stories chosen are the most favorite stories told by members of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee.

The biography of Mankiller who was the first woman to head the Cherokee Nation. She encouraged her people to work together toward change, drawing strength from their rich and distinctive heritage.

Yonder Mountain, A Cherokee Legend, Told by Robert H. Bushyhead and written by Kay Thorpe Bannon. Illustrated by Kristina Rodanas, Marshall Cavendish, New York, 2002.

This book retells a Native American folktale as a lesson for young readers.

Curious One, A Cherokee Story, Told by Robert H. Bushyhead, written by Kay Thorpe Bannon. Illustrated by Revina Sneed, Lobster Cove Publishing Company, Gloucester, MA 2001

The story takes place in the post European days in the mountains of North Carolina. The adventures of the curious little girl came out of the rich story telling sessions of Mr. Bushyhead’s childhood.

Considered the most comprehensive description of the culture and spirit of the Cherokees. This book contains the full texts of Myths of the Cherokee and The Sacred Formulas of the Cherokee, originally published by the Bureau of American Ethnology in 1900 and 1891.

This guidebook offers a unique journey into the homeland of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in the mountains of North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. The book is organized around seven geographical hubs or communities within the original Cherokee homeland.

On Friday, February 6, 2009, The Craddock Center will present the Fifth Annual Helen Lewis Lecture. The series of lectures was established in honor of anthropologist, Dr. Helen Lewis, to focus on a specific area of Appalachian life and culture. We are pleased to announce the 2009 lecturer will be Marian Wright Edelman, the Founder and President of the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) in Washington, D.C.
