I WAS IN OKLAHOMA

When first I heard of an interesting program of the national government to aid farmers, in particular farmers who had been too productive. It seems the law of supply and demand was out of whack due to overproduction of certain commodities, resulting in low prices. One of the abundant commodities was hogs. A friend of mine was a small scale hog farmer. The government notified him that he would be paid rather handsomely not to raise any hogs that year. Being patriotic and all, he agreed not to raise his usual 20 hogs. I saw the check. Wow! The program was a success and remained in effect the next year. My friend signed on again, but this time he agreed not to raise 40 hogs. I saw the check. Double wow! The last year he was in the program, he was not raising 200 hogs. I did not see the check. Direct deposit, you know; that much money cannot be trusted to the mail service.

I like this program, more money coming in the less you do. In fact, I am going to try it. You know about our scholarship program, $140.00 per year per child in the Children’s Enrichment Program. Well, I am not going to mention it.

You know that our Emergency Relief Fund, now near depletion, will face heavy demands with the onset of winter. Well, I will not say a word about it.

You know that we would like to fund another musician/storyteller position so that the lives of more HeadStart children can be enriched. Well, I will not bring it up, not even a whisper.

I do like this program. Now every morning I will go to the mail box full of anticipation. — FBC

MEET JOHN BEAVIN

John BeavinOur newest Arts Specialist on the Children Enrichment Program Staff.  John is a native Georgian, who grew up in Atlanta and received his BBA and MBA from Georgia State.  He served in the Army as a paratrooper, a data processor for The Southern Company, and was self-employed as a trainer and consultant the past 13 years before retiring.  John has been a member of the Southern Order of Storytellers since 1989.  He and his wife,  Dyanne, plan to build a log home in Cashes Valley in 2009. We are fortunate to have John as the storyteller with the eight HeadStart/Pre-K classes in Lumpkin County. Welcome, “Mr. John”!!!!! -- TLS

I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD COME TO THIS

But it has. When our Preaching Workshops were in the log church we accepted 90 and then started a waiting list. There were always a few who registered but were unable to come. I kept making my speech entitled “But when we get into the new church building.”

Now we are in a larger room and it is not large enough. So — here we go again with a waiting list. Registrations are at 150 and we have started a waiting list for the Monday, Oct. 6 workshop on “Thirteen Ways to End a Sermon”.

I am not worried; football fields are available on Monday mornings. — FBC
